Why IATA does not allow smart luggage with batteries as checked baggage?

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) prohibits the carrying of so called battery powered smart luggage or power banks in checked baggage for safety reasons. This rule applies practically worldwide. Why? Here are the reasons:

  1. Fire hazard: Power banks can catch fire if used improperly or damaged. In checked baggage, there is a higher risk that such incidents will go unnoticed and become dangerous.
  2. Risk of short circuits: Power banks or smart luggage with batteries are not permitted as checked baggage to prevent short circuits. If they are accidentally switched on or damaged, they could cause problems.
  3. Transport regulations: Most airlines, including Condor, Lufthansa and Ryanair, explicitly state that smart luggage with batteries are not allowed as checked baggage. They are usually allowed as hand baggage, but certain restrictions apply. For example, they must be protected against short circuits.

Smart luggage, which contains suitcases with built-in batteries, has been banned in checked baggage since January 15, 2018. This is because the power supply in the first generations of these smart luggage items was often not easily removable.

Overall, it is important to follow airline safety guidelines to ensure a smooth flight.

What is the technical difference between battery and super-capacitor

Batteries and supercapacitors are both energy storage devices, but their operation and properties are fundamentally different:

Batteries

Energy storage: Batteries store energy through chemical reactions. In a battery, there are two poles (anode and cathode) with an electrolyte in between. The electrolyte contains ions that move during the charging and discharging process.

Voltage constancy: Batteries provide a relatively constant voltage when discharging.

Energy density: Batteries have a higher energy density than supercapacitors, which means they can store more energy per unit weight.

Applications: Batteries are used in many applications, such as portable devices, electric vehicles, and as a main power source.

Super-Capacitors

Energy storage: Supercapacitors store energy as an electrostatic field. They do not use chemical reactions like batteries. Charge storage is very fast and efficient.

Power density: Supercapacitors have a high power density, which means they can deliver a greater amount of power per unit weight.

Fast charge and discharge cycles: Supercapacitors can charge quickly and release the energy just as quickly, making them ideal for applications that require fast energy delivery or absorption.

Applications: Supercapacitors are ideal when it comes to short-term power source for electronic devices like in our Huckets weight scale application.

Can super capacitors explode?

Supercapacitors (also known as ultracapacitors) are an advanced form of capacitors characterized by their high capacity and energy efficiency. Unlike conventional batteries, supercapacitors store energy not through chemical reactions but through electrostatic storage at the interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. This charge storage occurs very quickly and efficiently, resulting in high power density.

Conveniently, supercapacitors cannot catch fire or explode. Unlike batteries, which can become dangerous due to excessive heating during short circuits, supercapacitors do not heat up as much due to their low internal resistance. Therefore, they are safer to handle.

Supercapacitors in our application with their ability to absorb and release energy quickly makes them ideal as we require rapid charge and discharge cycles.

Overall, supercapacitors are a promising technology with many advantages, and their safety is another plus especially when it comes to airtraveling.
