Why They Seem So Cheap at First Glance

Low-cost airlines often save significantly on personnel costs by offering online check-in only or by charging hefty fees for airport check-in.

Hand luggage remains a critical factor. According to a 2014 ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), hand luggage must „always remain free.“

The challenge is that there are no universal regulations governing the size and weight of hand luggage.

Airlines set their own maximum sizes and weight limits, which also allow them to impose surcharges if these limits are exceeded.

Cost Traps Due to Lack of Standards

For example, an Irish low-cost provider only allows a small piece of hand luggage, such as a laptop bag, free of charge.

Depending on the route, larger hand luggage items cost between six and thirty-six euros when booked online. At the counter on site, however, the cost rises to 20 to 38 euros per item.

It gets even more expensive at boarding, when it’s almost too late — you could be charged up to 46 euros. Considering that flight tickets sometimes cost only 10 to 15 euros, these fees are significant in percentage terms.

Other budget airlines are more accommodating: a small piece of hand luggage may be free. Larger items, such as a rolling trolley, cost at least 7.99 euros.

It’s important to note that airlines often change their size and weight guidelines for hand luggage. This is, of course, systematic, as uncertainty increases the likelihood of passengers falling into cost traps.

That’s why it’s crucial to always check the permitted dimensions before departure and to measure and weigh your luggage carefully when packing.

At least there is already a “motion for a resolution on standard dimensions for hand luggage”. The EU Parliament’s resolution on uniform pricing and size requirements for hand luggage on airplanes was successful. The EU Commission has been called upon to propose measures for implementation.
