Advantages of supercaps
Supercapacitors are well-suited for our sensors-family in luggage because they can store and release energy very quickly. They’re ideal for functions like weight measurement or interim power storage for NFC-activated sensors.

Fast charging
Fast Charging: They can draw the power needed for a measurement or data transfer in a fraction of a second from an NFC reader’s field. Lithium-ion batteries require more time for this.
Long lifespan
Supercapacitors can withstand millions of charge and discharge cycles without losing capacity. Conventional batteries have a much lower cycle life. This is crucial because the sensors will be activated very frequently.
Patent pending and protected
No Deep Discharge
Supercapacitors are not damaged by being completely discharged. Normal batteries can be permanently damaged by deep discharge.
Temperature Tolerance
They work reliably across a wide temperature range, which is an advantage given the fluctuating temperatures in an aircraft’s cargo hold.

Supercapacitors vs. Lithium-Ion Batteries
- Advantage of Supercapacitors: They are significantly safer. They do not contain flammable liquid electrolytes that can ignite if damaged or overheated. A thermal runaway, which can occur with lithium-ion batteries, is virtually impossible with supercapacitors. They cannot explode.
- Disadvantage of Supercapacitors: Lower energy density. They store much less energy per unit volume. But all our modules need only very low amount of electric power. So it is a win-win-solution.
Supercapacitors vs. Alkaline Batteries
- Advantage of Supercapacitors: Alkaline batteries (e.g., AA batteries) can leak and contain corrosive substances. Supercapacitors are hermetically sealed and cannot leak. They also have a longer lifespan and better cycle stability.
- Disadvantage of Supercapacitors: Alkaline batteries have a higher energy density. But such high density is not required for all our applicatons.
Safety Conclusion
Supercapacitors are the safest option for power storage in luggage and offer significant safety advantages over all common battery types.
